Struggles With Half Marathon Training

I signed up for the Rock N’ Roll half marathon in New Orleans months ago. The only thing that crossed my mind when registering was that I was going to be able to see 4 of my friends from Boston and that the weather in the beginning of March in NOLA would be good for running.

What I didn’t consider:

  • the weather in Wisconsin during the winter. it is COLD. training on a treadmill is the worst.
  • training would take place during the holidays when i would be traveling a ton.
  • i work two jobs. one full time job and one job three nights a week.

What I didn’t anticipate:

  • getting sick for two weeks
  • hurting my foot because i’m an idiot

Therefore, training for this half marathon has been basically non existent and I am terrified about this race.

I am crossing my fingers that my foot feels better in the next few days (basically something is wrong with my pinky toe, which led me to walking on the inside of my foot awkwardly for a 5 hour serving shift. yes, i completely caused this injury myself and i’m pissed about it). If all goes as planned, that leaves me 4 weeks to be able to run 13 miles.  AH!

Happy weekend!

Capitol Views

This is the view from my current office:

Capitol in Madison, WI.

Can’t complain since my last view when I used to look up from my computer was a wall to my cube. I’d say this is a serious upgrade!

My new job also allows me to come home every day during lunch. Loving that little perk.

Back to work! Happy Tuesday.

The Life of a Temp

Life has been so busy lately.

I picked up a waitressing job, that I love.

Which means I have been working two jobs.

And I am transitioning from one temp job to a new temp job.

A lot of changes have been happening in my life, changes for the better.

As I have talked about in the past, I have had a hard time finding a job and I currently am working in a temp position that I haven’t liked since the beginning. It isn’t a position that engages me, at all. Most days are just downright boring and I watch the clock until it strikes 4:00.

I have put myself out there for so many different opportunities and nothing ever worked out. Until now.

I was contacted by another temp agency saying they found my resume online and had a position I might be interested in. I really didn’t want to work with another temp agency but considering my feelings about my current temp position, I couldn’t say no. I went through the interview process and came out on top! I got a new temp job, woop woop! I start tomorrow and am pretty excited!

The life of a temp is nothing glamorous. There is a lot of insecurity. You are literally the lowest man on the totem poll. But sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. And for now, this is it!

Oh, and did I mention it’s SNOWING here in Madison today?!

Wasn’t expecting that. Not ready for it at all!!

Post Gap

I can’t believe how long it has been since the last time I wrote a post. After a busy morning at work I figure I will take this slow afternoon to show my blog some love.

I have been terribly busy lately and have a hard time fitting my daily blog post into my schedule (let’s just say that I was passed out by 10:30 last night. I can’t remember the last time I went to bed before midnight). I have been taking pictures as if I am going to blog and then just never get around to posting (anticipate a few posts about meals I’ve been eating lately)! My goal is to get better at blogging now that I am almost completely settled into my apartment and getting into a routine here at my temp job.

Speaking of temp job, let’s talk about it!

I have mentioned in a few posts that I am working at a temp job…and that it bores me to death. Well, this is still the case. While they have given me more work to do on a daily basis (hallelujah) I still find myself counting down the minutes until the end of the day and run to the door the second the clock strikes 4:30. I really want a job that I love and that is rewarding. This job doesn’t meet either of those requirements. Hopefully something will come my way soon!!

I have also been lacking in the exercise department. I want to commit myself to posting daily work outs which will help ensure that I am 1. blogging and 2. working out. We will see how this plan pans out. Hopefully for the best. 🙂

Hopefully I’ll hit ya with another post later on tonight, but until then…happy Tuesday!

Peaceful

Yesterday I talked myself into going to the gym after work despite my phone dying during the day which meant I wouldn’t have any music to listen to while trekking away on the treadmill. I convinced myself that I would be happier if I went, even if it was just to run two miles. Anything is better than nothing!

There is nothing worse than having to listen to all of the gym noises during a run. Without music not only did I have to listen to myself breathe heavy but I also couldn’t ignore my treadmill neighbors heavy breathing, the faint gym music in the background, weights dropping all over the place, the noise of the treadmill belt moving round and round, and an occasional grunt from other members.

This mornings run was just the opposite of my not-so-great-music-less treadmill run yesterday. I set the alarm last night for 6:15am so I could get a run in before work today. It is unlike me to start my day with a work out, but with plans to join a friend and her coworker for happy hour today I knew I needed to run this morning if I was going to at all. After hitting snooze once, I wasn’t sure if I would feel like getting up when the alarm went off again. When my alarm went off a second time I hopped out of bed, knowing I’d be mad at myself if I chose to sleep another 45 mins over going for a run.

Unlike yesterday, this morning I chose to run without music. The thought of the Lady Gaga or Black Eyed Peas Pandora station blasting in my ear at 6:30am just wasn’t appealing.

Running outside early in the morning with no music is so peaceful. This morning I didn’t mind hearing my heavy breathing and enjoyed the sounds of nature as I completed 3 miles.

Something else I love is how peaceful the lake looks early in the morning.

Great way to start the day! 🙂

Now I find myself at work. And my day looks a lot like this….

Is it 4:30 yet?! TGIF! Happy Friday!!

MIA

As I sit here and dunk oreos in milk I realize that I never posted the post I wrote to be posted today. Got that?

Things got busy after work…because it was moving day!! (again!) 🙂

So, here are my thoughts from this afternoon. I will get this blog back up and runnin just as soon as I can!

My apologies for being MIA for the last couple of days. With starting a job last week I found myself with a lot less free time to be able to spend blogging etc. And I have come to discover that weekend blogging just isn’t for me. I would rather spend my weekends hanging out with Phil, getting out of the apartment to be active, staying off the computer as much as possible, exploring Madison, and meeting new people. 🙂 That all sounds like a lot more fun, dontcha think?!
This weekend went by way too fast. During the week I love having plans to look forward to on the weekend but it seems as though weekends filled with plans go by so much faster than a weekend spent relaxing and being lazy.
Here is a little weekend recap for ya:
Home made dinner date with Phil
Movie night which turned into falling asleep earlier than expected night.
Saturday: Relaxing morning
Gym session
Phil helped his friend move which left me doing 5 loads of laundry (I don’t know why I always wait that long to do laundry), sun bathing, and reading.
Sushi dinner
Drinks with Phil
Met up with people for a going away celebration for one of Phil’s friends
Sunday: French toast breakfast, finished watching Hall Pass since we fell asleep during it Friday night
Driving range date with Phil 🙂
Went out to lunch
Lazy afternoon
Cooled off in the lake
Dinner date with Phil
Job application stuff
Finished the mini series The Pacific
Now here I am, mid day on Monday, at my extremely boring temp job, trying to keep myself entertained. I don’t know how much longer I can take it, haha. Day 5 and it hasn’t gotten any better. I am staying hopeful and keep reminding myself that at least I am getting paid for being put through extreme boredom.
On another note…today is moving day!! I am really excited about my new apartment and can’t wait to get it all set up. I have to pick up my key during my lunch break and am pretty sure it is going to be hard to convince myself to come back for the afternoon. We will see what happens. 😉
(Well, I can tell you that I’m not as big of a rebel as I make myself out to be and I quickly rushed back to work as soon as I picked up my apartment key. As of now, I am all moved in…thanks to the help of my wonderful boyfriend. 🙂 I am excited to take this week to set everything up. More details and pictures to come soon!)

Admin appreciation

Apparently one day this week it was administrative appreciation day. Maybe it is a week long thing? I’m not really sure. I should probably know this since I am apart of this group that is being appreciated.

It was a nice surprise when my boss walked in with flowers for me and the other admin today!

pretty flowers, I love the colors! Very spring 🙂

It’s nice to be appreciated, especially when I wasn’t expecting it! The flowers smell so good, everyone in the office keeps commenting on them.

On another note…can we just talk about how NICE it is outside?! I took a walk to get some lunch and almost didn’t return to the office. I am so bummed that I can’t do something fun outside after work. Done with job number 1 at 4:00 and off to job number 2 at 5:00. BUMMER! I can think of a much better way to spend my Friday evening. Booo 😦
