I signed up for the Rock N’ Roll half marathon in New Orleans months ago. The only thing that crossed my mind when registering was that I was going to be able to see 4 of my friends from Boston and that the weather in the beginning of March in NOLA would be good for running.
What I didn’t consider:
- the weather in Wisconsin during the winter. it is COLD. training on a treadmill is the worst.
- training would take place during the holidays when i would be traveling a ton.
- i work two jobs. one full time job and one job three nights a week.
What I didn’t anticipate:
- getting sick for two weeks
- hurting my foot because i’m an idiot
Therefore, training for this half marathon has been basically non existent and I am terrified about this race.
I am crossing my fingers that my foot feels better in the next few days (basically something is wrong with my pinky toe, which led me to walking on the inside of my foot awkwardly for a 5 hour serving shift. yes, i completely caused this injury myself and i’m pissed about it). If all goes as planned, that leaves me 4 weeks to be able to run 13 miles. AH!

Being in and out of the gym before sunrise feels so good but so wrong at the same time. Every time I get my butt out of bed and to the gym before the work day, I always feel extremely happy that I did it.
Despite getting less than 6 hours of sleep last night, I woke up this morning feeling motivated to knock off the 4 miles on my half marathon training plan. (Note to self: tonight, make sleep a priority)
My 4 miles flew by thanks to this work out:
Instead of just running at a steady pace for X amount of miles, I find myself enjoying my work outs a lot more when there is a little variety. For example, changing up the speed or incline. It is easier for me to make it through multiple miles when I have short term goals within the total work out. Telling myself that I need to run 4 miles sounds a lot harder than focusing on the first .4 of a mile. Give this work out a try!
I have talked before about how I don’t have music on my phone and listen to Pandora when I work out.
Typically my go to stations are the Lady Gaga station or the Black Eyed Peas station. They both have a great music selection that help me power through my work out. If you haven’t tried them, then you should!
Lately I have been getting sick of always hearing the same songs over and over again. I have been loving the song “I’m Sexy And I Know It” by LMFAO and got the brilliant idea to listen to the LMFAO Pandora station.
I do not regret the idea one bit! It was just what I needed to mix up my work outs. Some of the songs are a little out there and almost annoying but overall the station treated me well and has left me looking forward to listening to it the next time I work out!

My Sunday was all about Autumn. The weather was a perfect fall day. I was able to wear many of my fall favorites and spend a ton of time outside.
Two of my friends and I spent the afternoon apple picking. I have been wanting to go apple picking since the first signs of fall appeared. I was so happy when we decided to go. I now have 10 pounds worth of apples sitting in my fridge.
10 lbs of apples equals a lot of baking!
But before the baking began I completed a 7 mile run. And let me tell you, it felt great. I am running at 15k on Sunday with a friend and I figured running 7 miles would be a good number to end on the week before the race. A few short runs this week and I’ll be golden!
Now back to the good stuff. Baking with apples!
The first thing I decided to make was apple crisp. I resorted to good ol’ Pinterest and found an apple crisp recipe that I had all the ingredients for. Perfect!
Using this apple crisp recipe (minus the nutmeg because I didn’t have any) I turned these:
Obviously topped with some vanilla ice cream. Is there any other way to eat apple crisp?! All I can say is that it was a hit! Between me, Phil, and his roommates the whole entire batch of apple crisp disappeared.
Another batch will be made in the near future. Along with an apple pie perhaps?
I don’t consistently blog about my daily work outs. When there is something new or exciting to share then I post it, but do you really want to hear day in and day out that I ran X amount of miles on a treadmill? I didn’t think so.
I do, however, personally like to know how much I run each day and week. I have been using a website called Daily Mile for a few weeks now. I really love it! It keeps a log of the amount of miles you ran (walked/biked/swam/etc) per day/week/month and it gives you an estimate of how many calories you burned during that work out based on your weight and the amount of time it takes you to complete the work out you logged. Does that make sense?
You can also map out runs before or after you’ve completed them (kind of like the website mapmyrun, but I personally find dailymile to be much better)! You can then make these routes public or private to the other people on the website.
Another thing that is cool about the website is it has a place where you can leave comments about your work out day to day. You can also rate how you felt during the work out by choosing one of six different emoticons.
Check out www.dailymile.com and create an account! It is super easy to use and an easy way to keep yourself motivated as well as set personal goals! Find me and follow my daily miles. 🙂
My body has been so sore lately, mainly my back. I blame sitting down in a chair for almost 8 hours a day. What I really want is a massage but they are expensive and will only temporarily fix my aches and pains. Because I have been so sore lately I have been making a point to stretch before my work outs and on days when I have the patience I stretch after as well.
This still isn’t enough.
For the past week or so I have been flirting with the idea of trying yoga. I have been hesitant to take a class at the gym because I have never done yoga before. Or taken any class at my gym for that matter. I’d be much more comfortable with trying it in the privacy of my own home. Lucky for me, this can happen! And it happened today!
I got my hands on this DVD:
After work today I really wasn’t feeling the gym. I told myself I was allowed to skip as long as I went home and did the yoga DVD. Before inserting the DVD into my computer, I really wasn’t sure what to expect. All I knew was that if I couldn’t hold a pose or looked like an idiot, at least I was in the privacy of my own apartment.
Here are my thoughts on yoga after “completing” this DVD:
- There are five 10 minute segments, I only completed one segment
- Yoga is HARD
- I am no where near flexible
- Thank God I did this in the privacy of my own home
- I really don’t like yoga
At least I gave it a shot, right?! Maybe I will try it again sometime soon and maybe my opinion will change but for now, yoga is not for me.
Time to make dinner and watch the Red Sox game. Seriously, what a joke they have been lately. Hopefully they can get it together for this game. And I never thought I’d say this, but I hope the Yankees win too! Go Sox!
I love when I am on a work out kick. It makes me feel good physically and mentally.
After work today I was excited to hit the gym. I love going to the gym with a positive attitude. It always makes my work out so much better!
Today my work out looked like this:
30 Minute Treadmill Work Out
- 0-10 minutes: 7.0 pace to start, increasing .1 every minute
- 10-20 minutes: at 10 minutes, decrease to a 7.1 pace, increasing .1 every minute
- 20-30 minutes: at 20 minutes, decrease to 7.5 pace, increasing .1 every minute
I have done this work out three of the last five days and let me tell you, my legs are feelin’ it and I’m lovin’ it! In addition to the treadmill work out I also completed this arm work out from last week.
Tonight has been spent with Phil (:D) doing endless amounts of laundry, eating a “surprise” dinner, and watching Modern Family. Check ya later!
